Timing

Most people shoot between 30 and 36 weeks, when the bump is well-defined but moving around is still comfortable. There's no wrong week — earlier or later both work, especially for a more casual, candid set.

Poses that work

Shoot it yourself, hands-free

Reaching for a phone or remote mid-pose tenses your shoulders and shows in the photo — and it's awkward at any stage of pregnancy. Prop the phone on a tripod or stable surface at roughly chest height, get into position, and say “take a photo.” Run through each pose several times; the most natural-looking frame is rarely the first one.

FAQ

What week should I take maternity photos?

Most people shoot between 30 and 36 weeks, when the bump is defined but it's still comfortable to move and pose. Any week can work depending on the look you want.

Do I need a professional photographer for maternity photos?

No. Good window light, a plain background and a hands-free shutter cover most of what a studio session does, and you can shoot as many frames as you like without a clock running.

How do I include my partner in a hands-free maternity photo?

Prop the phone on a tripod, get into position together, and say “take a photo” — either of you can trigger it without breaking the pose to reach for the phone.
