How to take a picture with your webcam online

  1. Start the camera. Click Start the camera and allow access when your browser asks. Voice and Clap modes also need the microphone.
  2. Pick how to trigger it. Voice listens for “take a photo.” Clap fires on a clap or finger snap. Timer counts down after you tap the shutter (tap the Timer button again for 3, 5 or 10 seconds).
  3. Get in position. Sit back, stand up, hold something up to the camera. Your hands are free.
  4. Shoot and save. The photo pops up right away. Download it as a JPG, share it, or keep shooting; the thumbnail next to the shutter reopens your latest shot.

The difference from a normal self-timer is control. A countdown fires whether you're ready or not; a voice shutter waits until you are. Read more about how a voice-activated camera compares with timers and remotes.

What people use the online camera for

Private by design

The camera runs entirely inside this browser tab. There's no account and no server receiving your photos. Each shot is made on your device and only saved when you click Download. Close the tab and they're gone. Clap and Timer modes never send anything anywhere. Voice mode relies on your browser's speech recognition, which Chrome may process on Google's servers.

FAQ

How do I take a picture with my webcam online?

Click Start the camera above and allow camera access. Then say “take a photo,” clap, or tap the shutter. The photo opens instantly and you can download it as a JPG. Nothing to install and no account.

Can I take a webcam photo with my voice?

Yes. In Voice mode, say “take a photo,” “take a picture,” “take a selfie” or just “cheese” and the camera fires. Say it again for the next shot. It uses your browser's built-in speech recognition, so it works best in Chrome, Edge and Safari.

Does the online camera have a timer?

Yes. Switch to Timer and tap the shutter for a countdown. Tap the Timer button again to cycle between 3, 5 and 10 seconds. Tap the shutter during the countdown to cancel.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up or download anything?

It's free, with no sign-up and no download. It runs entirely in your web browser on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Linux, iPhone and Android.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Photos are captured and stored in your browser tab and never leave your device. Clap and Timer modes are completely local. In Voice mode the browser's own speech engine does the listening; Chrome may send audio to Google's speech service to recognise it, and Safari uses Apple's speech recognition. Want guaranteed offline voice? The free app runs its own on-device speech model.

Which browsers support the voice shutter?

Voice mode works in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari (Mac, iPhone and iPad). Firefox and some privacy browsers like Brave don't provide working speech recognition, so the page switches to Clap mode automatically; Clap and Timer work in every modern browser.

Can I use it as an online photo booth?

Yes. Prop up your laptop, step back and keep saying “cheese.” Every shot is kept in the tab (tap the thumbnail to open the latest), so you can grab a series of poses without touching the keyboard. Download your favourites before closing the tab.

Why does my photo have a watermark?

Photos from the free browser camera carry a small phonetakeaphoto.com stamp. The app takes full-resolution photos and video, and an optional in-app purchase removes the watermark.

The camera won't start. What should I check?

Make sure no other app (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime) is using the webcam, and that the site is allowed to use the camera and microphone in your browser's site settings. Then reload and click Start the camera again.
